Spalling Repair
What is spalling? Spalling is the chipping or cracking of concrete, usually due to moisture intrusion leading to internal pressure.Â

What causes spalling? There are many causes of spalling. The primary cause of spalling in the keys is the rusting of internal rebar due to electrolysis caused by the region's high airborne salinity, high humidity, and warm temperature.Â

Explain electrolysis...electrolysis is the chemical process where chlorides ( salt) disrupts the alkaline environment of the concrete, creating a small electrical current in the rebar, turning the iron into iron oxide (rust). The rust expands the rebar, causing the concrete around it to crumble and crack.Â

Why repair and not just fill? The problem is internal, affecting the structural integrity of the concrete. Patching spalling will take away the eyesore, but will leave the problem to grow out of sight and potentially lead to significant structural damage to your property. Â

We will help diagnose and quote your spalling work at no cost unless it requires extensive engineering. It's best to look at spalling repair as preventative, like brushing your teeth to prevent cavities or filling a cavity to prevent a root canal.

Barnes Concrete was started in 1990 by Robert Brown "Bob" Barnes Jr. with the goal of providing quality demolition work at a lower cost. Back then, the company specialized in concrete cutting and demolition with just Bob at the helm, serving such clients as The Disney Store, Marriot Hotels, and Hawk's Cay Resort. At the turn of the 21st century, the company partnered with other contractors and expanded its focus to building under the name Decco Construction, taking on several large builds for commercial and residential clients. The company continued to grow and provide a high standard of quality craftsmanship over the next 15 years. In 2016, Bob brought back Barnes Concrete under his own license and moved the company to the middle keys in Marathon,Fl, where he continued focus on building, repair, and renovations. Being in a marine environment, spalling and dock repair/replacement quickly became an added specialty and staple of business in the Keys. The company has been and continues to be family-run, with two members being Air Force vets. Today, we continue to serve South Florida and all of the Florida Keys with more staff, a greater scope of services--recently including murals and resin bartops, countertops, and floors--but with the same focus on quality and lasting durability on which the company was founded.Â
